Render is most commonly a sand and cement mix, often with lime added and most commonly used on the external walls of buildings and can be finished to different textures but it is also used as a backing plaster internally, as an alternative to cement based renders, lime based render can be used, while more costly has significant advantages over cement and where a breathable wall fabric needs to be maintained is the only option:
